School Choice
Allowing Parents to Choose their Children's Schools
In virtually every country in the world, parents are able to exercise some choice regarding their children's
schooling. Their options include choice among publicly-funded programs and schools (including charter schools),
independent (private) schools, and home schools. Some jurisdictions offer much more choice than others: for
example, Alberta offers the most choice in Canada, followed by British Columbia and Quebec. The Atlantic provinces
offer the least amount of choice.
There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding school choice and, in some cases, politicians have been guided
by incorrect beliefs when making important decisions about school funding and other policies related to school choice.
