The Society for Quality Education (SQE) believes that many, if not most, of the academic problems that public schools have are a result of several major structural problems with the way the public system is run. Arguably, one of the largest structural problems deals with the way public school teachers are trained, or not trained. Prof. Kymlicka's essay, written 13 years ago, looks at the historical roots of one Educational faculty and discovers some interesting problems. For example, he observes that education is controlled by the state, the teachers' unions, and the university. We at SQE believe that decisions about the goals and purposes of public schools should be open to all citizens. We publish his essay today hoping to shed light on the many challenges facing our mediocre public education system. Professor Kymlicka is not affiliated with SQE and SQE does not necessarily endorse Professor Kymlicka's views. |
