Release from the Society for Quality Education
TORONTO – September 21, 2006
The Society for Quality Education is proud to announce the availability of a new policy paper co-authored by SQE President, Malkin Dare. Why Canadian Education Isn’t Improving, an occasional paper in the series of The Fraser Institute Studies in Education Policy, is to be presented today at noon at the Toronto offices of The Fraser Institute, 1491 Yonge Street.
The other authors of the paper are Dr. John Merrifield, Professor of Economics at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Claudia R. Hepburn, Director of Education Policy and Managing Director of The Fraser Institute, Ontario Office.
The authors argue that well-intentioned political reforms in education over the past few years have done little to improve academic achievement results because “political control of schooling has significant, inherent deficiencies.” They make the case that “provincial governments in Canada should empower educators to develop a constantly improving, diverse menu of schooling options and rely on choice and competition for accountability.”
The complete paper can be accessed in PDF format at http://www.fraserinstitute.ca/shared/readmore.asp?sNav=pb
