School Choice Chosen by Education Experts

Toronto , Ont. – October 4, 2007

The Society for Quality Education (SQE) is pleased to receive confirmation that it is on the right track and that Ontario should bring in more school choice. Breaking Down Monopolies: Expanding Choice and Competition in Education , a summary of a School Choice in Public Education Roundtable, was published today by the C.D. Howe Institute (CDH).

From our reading of the research and our examination of the experience in other jurisdictions, we had formed a tentative conclusion that school choice was beneficial and that Ontario should have more of it. However, we wanted to have our conclusions tested by an independent organization, and so we approached CDH and asked it to assemble a group of educational experts to discuss school choice. The full backgrounder can be found at: www.cdhowe.org/pdf/backgrounder_105.pdf

“For low-income families, the benefits that school choice can bring are undisputed,” said SQE president Malkin Dare. “A cookie-cutter approach just does not meet the needs of all students and their parents,” added SQE executive director Doretta Wilson. “The CDH paper tells us that the Ontario education establishment must drop its traditional opposition to school choice – for the sake of the children.”

SQE wishes to acknowledge that the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools contributed a high level of support and participation.

The Society for Quality Education is a charitable, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting school choice in order to improve student learning in Canada . We invite the public to visit our web-site at www.societyforqualityeducation.org to learn more about what school choice is and the wonderful schools it makes possible.
