Ontario Sunshine on Schools Updated with Latest School Board Financial Data

Expenses and revenues climb - while enrolments drop

TORONTO – June 15, 2011

Accountability begins with transparency.  The Society for Quality Education announces more transparency for Ontarians with the latest school board financial data updates on the
Sunshine on Schools website www.SunshineOnSchools.ca

Ontario Sunshine on Schools is an interactive clearinghouse containing financial and achievement data for Ontario’s publicly funded school boards. This website is a valuable tool for policymakers, trustees, school administrators, media, parents, and taxpayers. Here, you will be able to search through School Board Summary pages to find current and historical data for any publicly funded Ontario School Board. You will be able to select and compare up to 5 school boards at one time.

The purpose of the Ontario – Sunshine on Schools website is to provide policy-makers and the general public with information on the revenue and expenditures of Ontario’s schools and to improve accountability within our education system by linking learning outcomes to costs.

Dr. Paul Bennett of Schoolhouse Consulting, in his address to the Measuring Up Seminar on School Accountability, said of the Sunshine tool:

"The Society for Quality Education continues to break new ground. SQE’s Sunshine on Schools is a fine step toward fuller disclosure that challenges the Ontario school boards to raise their game.  It’s a potentially powerful tool promoting more accountability.  Being able to assess the boards according to 40-odd performance measures is quite an advance." (Measuring Up, April 2011)

"We invite the public to compare their own school board's performance and decide if they are getting value for money," said SQE executive director Doretta Wilson.
