Yossarian the Grammarian

November 24, 2009 by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at 08:38 AM

Many parents have noted with dismay that their children’s writing is riddled with grammatical errors - run-on sentences, not enough commas and too many apostrophes, misplaced modifiers, and so forth. And when parents try to explain what the problem is, they discover that their children lack even the most rudimentary understanding of sentence structure and parts of speech. Trying to teach a non-grammatical child how to avoid run-on sentences is like trying to teach a Hottentot how to make a soufflé. Without the necessary background and vocabulary, it’s an exercise in frustration.

Yossarian the Grammarian to the rescue! In a series of 24 short videos, Yossarian teaches the basic elements of English sentence structure and grammar. The series starts, as it should, with the verb.

Sorry, but we don’t know how to contact Yossarian either. On the other hand, we do know quite a bit of grammar ourselves. What’s your question regarding case?

Dear Yossarian
My name is Ghennouchi Yacine. I am Algerian. I am a teacher of English in the high school.
I have been recently learning sentence diagramming. I have made a remarkable progress. However I encountered trouble diagramming compounds i.e. compound infinitives (phrases), compound gerunds (phrases), and compound participles ( phrases). I also require from you to give a hint about distinguishing infinitives functioning as direct objects and infinitives functioning as adverbs.

I will be asking more questions on diagramming.

Thanking you in anticipation

With my kind regards

Could you please give me some examples of the sentences you’re having trouble with? And, may I suggest that you contact me directly at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) rather than going through our blog? Malkin
