Whose Interests II

A few months back Malkin posted a great video entitled the Truth About Teacher Unions.  Well, it seems that more truths have come to light.  The California teachers’ union topped the list of state political spenders

According to the LA Times, since 2000 they have spent $211.8 million on political lobbying and campaign contributions to politicians.  They spent just about double what their state public sector counterpart spent.  Here’s the top five listed in the LA Times article:

—The California Teachers Assoc.,  $211.8 million.
—The California State Council of Service Employees, $107.4 million.
—The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, $104.9 million.
—The Morongo Band of Mission Indians, which operates a casino under a state-approved compact, $83.6 million.
—The Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, which also operates a casino, $69.2 million.

SQE wonders what Canadian federations spend on lobbying and contributions, not to mention their share to groups like Working Families Coalition. We also wonder if their members wonder.

It is all part of the public record. Do some digging.

The members know quite well that political action is very expensive but well worth the expense. Only the Tory members worry and nobody ever hears from them. The money is spent on both the Liberals and the NDP. The prime directive as they say in Star Trek, is to keep the Tories out of power because it is too destructive to education when these maurauding Visigoths are in however briefly.

You don’t speak for the members Doug. Actually you speak for no one but yourself.

One person, one “little” opinion.

Doretta - it’s no secret that the teacher unions have their hands in the wallets of educators whether they wish it or not. The teachers over at Mended sure as hell don’t like it.

Wasn’t the OSSTF caught up in some mess some time ago that ired the Jewish community? Dues wasted.

Dear Sheep,
What the federations do with their money, as a private organization is up to them. It is handled 100% democratically. Disgruntled conservatives have gone as far as the Supreme Court because they did not like dues being spent on things they did not believe in. They lost. It is up to the union how to spend its money. It 100% not up to Mr Sheep unless he is a dues paying member. If he is, he has one vote.

Dear Little,

It’s not up to you either thankfully.

I’m fine with that because I support the law as it is. You have a problem because you don’t like the teacher’s ability to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on political action. Too bad for you.

Teacher unions are simply unions like any other.

Being able to package what they do as something more noble than others is a bonus but their top priority is to protect their members and create demand for more of them.

It does get interesting to watch the spinning when what they attempt to do isn’t particularly a good thing for their students…

What is good for teachers is good for students and vice versa by definition. It is automatic and beyond any doubt.

Posted by Doug Little on 03/19 at 05:23 PM

Assuming, of course, that resources spent on making things “good” for teachers has no impact whatsoever on supplying things that may provide more or better “good” things for students Given a fixed amount of resources it isn’t possible to spend more in one area without spending less in another

.  Apart from that being impossible Doug claims are spot on.

When Doug claims something is “beyond any doubt” I’d be doubtful
