We’re not in Kansas anymore…

For those of us who went to school a while ago, the rising incidence and seriousness of bullying in schools is hard to believe. It certainly wasn’t like this when we were in school!

However, our investigation into why parents choose private schools found that one of the main reasons parents flee public schools is because they are worried about their children’s safety. Most of these parents further reported that they had found a safe haven in a private school. Clearly, it is possible for schools to address the bullying phenomenon effectively.

This report shows how seriously bullying is being taken in the US, and the widely-divergent numbers of reported bullyings reinforce the fact that schools can (and should) deal effectively with bullying.

I well-remember the schools when I was a kid—late 50’s early 60’s.  Forgive me for repeating myself, but I went to the toughest/poorest school in Windsor, On.  Loved it!  Ethnically diverse, academically strong, and a lot of good programmes in art, music, drama, sports.  I have so many fond memories from my five years there.  Some of the kids were very poor—no shoes, even undies were sometimes missing, never mind the malnourishment and head lice!  But we all got along.  Reading these blogs made me question why I was so happy there.  I realize now that one of the many reasons was that there was absoluely no bullying—we would have got into so much trouble if anyone had dared harass a fellow student!  We were fortunate to have grown up during a time when there was dicipline, phonics, city-wide exams, accountability.
Upon returning from Asia to Ontario, as a family we found that, here in Ontario, children were not fortunate enough to have such positive experiences in public schools—bullying was rampid, many teachers had bad attitudes.
It’s really simple hy bullying occurs today—the people in charge are not doing their jobs, therefore the children are suffering.  It’s so sad that the innocent have to be hurt because of uncaring adults in charge…
Honestly, why would anyone send their children to public schools nowadays?  If I had to do it over again, I’d not have gone anywhere near a gov’t-run school.  The kids get no education, plus they’re often psychologically damaged!
