Too Many Generals, Not Enough Foot Soldiers
Click here for the 2007 “Sunshine List”, the names of Ontario school board employees who earned more than $100,000. Since no classroom teachers earn this much, all of the names on the list represent bureaucratic positions. In 2003, there were 788 education sunshiners in Ontario. Each year, the number steadily increased, such that by 2007 there were 5,913 in the province, an increase of about 650%. It’s also worth noting that Ontario school enrolment fell by about three percent over the same period. You may wish to look up your own school board and see how it stacks up. A few boards have been relatively responsible, and others - for example, the Windsor-Essex Catholic School Board with an increase of 1275% - have not.
