A Better Class of Schools

December 08, 2009 by at 09:34 AM

When Lester Maddox, the bigoted ax-wielding former governor of Georgia was asked how he proposed to improve Georgia’s state prisons, he replied that there wasn’t much he could do unless he started getting “a better class of prisoner”. Similarly, many educators excuse their failures by pointing to their students’ disadvantaged backgrounds, drugs and alcohol, television, and so forth. This video on the KIPP schools demonstrates unequivocally that all students can learn - if taught properly.

The hard work, longer hours, and a longer school year are why the teachers’ unions in Ontario, and elsewhere across NA, don’t want voucher systems nor charter schools.  It’ll come to Ontario someday though, and I hope I see it in my lifetime!

I wish they had talked more specifically about the academic improvement—that would have been very interesting.

There’s a bit about it in Part 2 of the video.

KIPP is famous for “creaming” that is why Geoffrey Canada would not deal with them in Harlem. Their teacher turnover is 300% per year. The charter model is not scalable and is already running on empty. The charter movement fully understands this.
